About MIT 4 RISK

We are a start-up software and solutions provider company aimed at helping Canadian Small to Medium Enterprises (SME) to better protect themselves from money laundering and terrorist financing. Profit making is not our primary goal for setting up the business, we are keen on promoting the concept of Anti-Money Laundering (AML) for the SMEs so that they might have a better understanding of nature and how it affects their business. By providing our expertise and exposure in this specialized aspect, we want to make some contributions, more specifically, to help SMEs understand more on technical know-how on assessing their Anti-Money Laundering (AML) risks and to implement a desirable and affordable compliance program comprising of Know Your Customer (KYC) process easily.
 

About the Founder

Timothy But started his career as an Information technology officer at Hong Kong Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) after acquiring the Bachelor of Engineering in 2000. He was responsible for overseeing the implementation of various system infrastructure designs and providing technical consultancy advice for various IT projects. After acquiring the Bachelor of Laws in the University of Hong Kong in 2006, he took on the position of Investigator with the Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) with the  HKSAR Government. In there, he was responsible for undertaking inquiries and investigations including money laundering and relevant corruption cases. Then he joined Customs and Excise Department of HKSAR Government as an Inspector and engaged in the investigations on drugs and smuggling-related money laundering cases in the Financial Investigation Group.

Starting from 2010, he worked for Joint Financial Intelligence Unit (JFIU) (An agency in Hong Kong that functions as similar as “FINTRAC” in Canada) and acquired concrete and wide exposures on handling a high volume of financial intelligence and Suspicious Transaction Reports (STR) filed by different sectors in Hong Kong.

Between 2019 to 2022, he further equipped himself by acquiring professional qualifications on Certified Anti-Money Specialist (CAMS), Certified Global Sanctions Specialist (CGSS) and Advanced CAMS-Risk Management (CAMS-RM) by the Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists (ACAMS).

 

Our Goal

We understand that demands on AML risk assessment and compliance including KYC in the course of business are usually challenging for Small to Medium Size (SME) enterprises.  Our goal is to assist SMEs in a variety of industries, including but not limited to Real estate, Dealers in precious metals and stones, and Securities dealers, in implementing a simple but effective AML compliance program.
